In honor of Black History Month, for 28 days murals were painted all throughout Phoenix, Arizona to honor more than 80 Black Pioneers. Community activist Gizette Knight was the organizer of the project in response to the rejection of a previous proposal she had to paint a Black Lives Matter mural in Downtown Phoenix last year. Looking at various artists like Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger and Tauber Auerbach, I realized that we hadn’t talked much about artists using murals in their activist work. Which has led me to the question of: is there a better art medium than another to easily project critique/resistance to oppression and inequality?
