Dr. Seuss is known for his distinct illustrations of whimsical characters, but his series of “midnight paintings” are much heavier and lack the fun tone of his more well-known works. Several of these paintings depict strange cities that reminded me of the “Invisible Cities” stories we read. There is something mysterious and abandoned about Dr. Seuss’ midnight paintings that convey an almost sinister feeling, and I think it is interesting to see such a different side of an artist whose work has an otherwise highly recognizable style.
